Even as the end of summer draws near, the heat is not slowing down any time soon. After a long day, why not end it with some refreshing ice cream? Whether you like it in a cone or self-serve cup, there’s something for everyone. Read on to find out where you and your friends can enjoy frozen treats this summer close to your Axis Edwardsville apartment.
Northside Dairy Haven
Northside Dairy Haven is a simple, no-frills kind of place. From the outside, it resembles a large food stand more than a restaurant, but never judge a place by its modesty. At Dairy Haven, there is a variety of ice cream styles and you will be sure to find one that suits your current mood, from the old-fashioned treat in a waffle cone to frozen custard and sherbet. Make sure you check out this place soon because it will close as winter approaches.
Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt
Those looking for some delicious yet healthy treats can find them at Orange Leaf, a self-serving fro-yo shop for the modern student. But Orange Leaf is about more than just frozen yogurt. The brand promotes creativity and individualism in encouraging guests to try new flavors and mix and match to find their own unique taste. The original Orange Leaf is headquartered in Oklahoma and has many stores throughout different states, including one just minutes from your apartment.
Annie’s Frozen Custard
Annie’s is the go-to place if you find yourself needing that fix of frozen custard. A local favorite in southern Illinois, Annie’s serves custard in five flavors: vanilla, vanilla lite, chocolate, butter pecan, and a flavor of the day. You can then choose from a variety of nuts, candies, fruits, and sauces to put on top. Customers love Annie’s for its friendly staff and retro-style restaurant that appeals to visitors of all ages.

The spring semester is over, grills are heating up and the smell of sunscreen fills the air! Summer has come to Edwardsville and with temperatures well into the 90’s and beyond, you may be looking for some new ways to beat the heat! There are many things you can do at home to stay cool and comfortable. Consider trying one of these five ideas to help you chill out this summer in your AXIS Edwardsville apartment.
Indulge in a Cool Bath – Dim the lights and fill up the tub for a relaxing summer soak. Keep the temperature just warm enough to be comfortable and add some soothing peppermint oil or bath salts to pamper yourself while you relax. If you don’t have time for a bath, simply applying cold, wet rags on your neck and wrists can help you cool off quickly as well.
Try a Frozen Treat – Freeze grapes and berries. These quick treats are delicious and healthy. They are tasty plain, but you can also add them to many other treats. Frozen berries easily liven up ice cream and yogurt or try adding them to water and tea for an indulgent, cool drink.
Swap out Your Tablet for a Book – Electronic devices are convenient and increasingly necessary. You probably use your phone or tablet for everything from photos to reading ebooks, but they generate a ton of heat! Keep cool and relax by picking up a spicy summer novel or magazine instead.
Take a Sunset Swim – A refreshing swim in our beautiful pool is always a great way to keep cool, but why not try taking a dip in the late afternoon hours when the temperatures drop a bit? Head out to the pool this evening instead of in the morning.
Turn Off Your Oven – Major appliances can heat up your apartment quickly in the summer months. Keep it simple and stick with sandwiches or a store-bought rotisserie chicken for dinner tonight. You might try a fresh summer salad with seasonal fruits and veggies for supper instead. Or why not break all the rules and have a little fro-yo for dinner!

Summer is the perfect time to relax and have some fun with your friends. What could possibly be more fun than a concert? Free concerts! That is exactly what members of the Axis Edwardsville apartment community can find every Thursday evening through the end of July at Southern Illinois University.
These free concerts cover a variety of musical genres including classic rock, reggae, and bilingual Latin jams. There is something for everyone’s musical taste. And since these concerts are free, go ahead and check out something you might not normally be interested in. You never know, you just might be a bilingual Latin jam band fan if you give it a chance.
The concerts alternate locations between SIU Shyrock and Turley Park. Make sure you check this concert flyer for the right location. Concerts are BYOB but make sure you only bring single-serving containers and no glass. While free concerts are cool, underage drinking is illegal and not tolerated at this event. Second-hand smoke inhalation isn’t cool either, but you don’t have to worry about that because this is a smoke-free event. Also, as much fun as it sounds to bring Fido or Fluffy with you to enjoy some reggae, these concerts do not allow animals.
Make sure you take advantage of these awesome, free concerts on Thursday evenings (concerts start at 7 PM). Check back with us for more events & activities at Southern Illinois University. You don’t want to miss out on the fun, especially free fun! We hope you enjoy these fantastic free summer concerts!
