Student Activities in Edwardsville: Join the Audubon Society and Enjoy Nature

If you love to get out and walk or hike in nature, you are not alone. If you also love to congregate with other people who love the outdoors, you are also not alone. Why? Because you have the Southern Illinois Audubon Society (SIAS) nearby. Audubon societies are very concerned with conservation and wild birds, but they also sponsor nature hikes and a number of events that are very open to students. Hiking is thus a great student activity in Edwardsville.

In December and January, for example, SIAS will be very involved in winter bird counts. These bird counts—which continue through January—are hikes in which participants count and identify species of birds. Socializing follows. The group also hosts public astronomy gazings on the SIUE campus during the year. The group also hosts meetings every month with potluck dinners.

In April, SIAS hosts an event called the Birding Blitz of Southernmost Illinois, in which teams compete to see how many birds they can see and identify within a 24-hour period. Winners will be announced at a brunch later in the Spring. Public lands in the area include Cypress Creek National Wildlife Refuge, Cache River State Natural Area, Mermet State Fish and Wildlife Area, Horseshoe Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area, Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge, Giant City State Park, Trail of Tears State Forest, and the Shawnee National Forest.

The SIAS also plans international tours. In June, for example, they will run a nature tour of Trinidad and Tobago, with hiking, bird watching, and West Indian food as part of the tour.

The next time you find yourself yearning to take a hike or get some fresh air – be sure to consider the Southern Illinois Audubon Society and the many activities it has to offer right here in Edwardsville.
